Welcome to The Impression
A note from the editor.
I am so excited to welcome you to The Impression, our new resource center on all things oral care. I hope you’ve had the chance to read an article already, or that you have one saved to read later. But you only get to launch something once, so I wanted to tell you a little bit about what this is and why we’re doing it.
More than 60% of U.S. counties don’t have an orthodontist, while 100 million people lack dental insurance. That’s why Candid exists. But that gap in coverage doesn’t just limit access to treatment — it limits access to information. Without the ability to speak directly to a dentist or orthodontist about their concerns, people are left to seek out their own answers. And while the internet has made many things possible — our direct-to-consumer distribution model, for one — it’s also made it harder to know who you can trust when you want to learn something.
That’s the gap The Impression is trying to fill.
Our tag line is “straight talk on oral care,” and that’s exactly what we’re here to provide: science-based, expert-backed feature articles on different topics around teeth. There’s a ton of noise out there, so we’re trying to cut through it by bringing the same clinical rigor and expertise that informs our standard of care to everything we write about. We’ll be honest and unbiased. We’ll lean into nuance. We believe in transparency, so our sourcing will be an open book.
In other words, we’ll be candid.
Our inaugural group of articles hits on a wide variety of topics, and I’m so proud of the work our writers have done. We’re exploring the connection between oral care and your heart, and explaining what can happen to your teeth during pregnancy. (Spoiler alert: A lot.) We’re diving into the surprisingly complex question of the difference between dentists and orthodontists. We’re even returning to everyone’s teenage anxiety dreams and telling you exactly what to do when you lose your retainer. And that’s just the start.
We won’t just be publishing science-backed feature articles, though. We’ll also be exploring the human side of oral care — the stories behind people’s decisions to seek treatment and its impact on their lives. I can’t wait for you to meet the amazing Lynne Nicolari, who’s reinventing herself as a model at age 60 and who is, as far as I can tell, one of the coolest people ever.
(True story: After our writer and photographer finished up their interview with her, Lynne offered them beers for the train home. It was three in the afternoon.)
There are so many stories like Lynne’s: moving, inspiring, sometimes even hilarious. We’re going to tell as many of them as we can.
In closing, I’ll tell you the same thing I’ve been telling our writers: Our goal is to provide real value to readers whether or not they ever become Candid customers. Empowering people to make informed decisions about their care is a key part of our mission, and if, in some small way, what we write about helps them do that — or even if it just helps them feel seen — we’ll consider it a win. Thanks for reading. I can’t wait to keep sharing with you. ✧
